Langkawi, Kedah (II) - Day 2 (Kilim Geoforest Park - Dataran Lang - Pantai Cenang)
On our second day in Langkawi, we woke up around 8.15am and left the hotel by 9am. Jon drove us to The Village Cafe for breakfast, a cozy place with a relaxed, homely vibe. I ordered the grilled cheese toast, while my partner chose the avocado toast. The cheese toast was delicious, with crispy golden-brown bread and rich melted cheese. However, the avocado toast tasted a little different than expected. The avocado flavour was quite mild, and it had a slight sourness with a subtle hint of spice.
Alan ordered the chicken and cheese burger, which was very filling. It came with a juicy chicken patty topped with melted cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, and sauteed onions, served with a side of fries. Uncle chose the French toast drizzled with honey syrup, which looked soft and comforting. The loaded omelette was equally hearty, made with three eggs, cheese, mushrooms, onions, and tomatoes.
The cafe had a unique feel, with 18 cats roaming freely around the space, which made the atmosphere lively and playful. It has been operating for about a year, and the owner is from Subang Jaya. The cafe was surrounded by trees, although some spots still received a bit of sunlight. Overall, it was a relaxing breakfast experience with good food and a pleasant, casual setting.

After breakfast, we headed to Medan Niaga Tanjung Rhu and arrived at around 10.40am. There were many stalls offering private boat tour packages. One of the vendors first showed us a leaflet stating the tour price was RM 550. However, they later offered us a special price of RM 300 for all six of us. My partner then booked the two-hour private boat tour at that rate, which was cheaper than the package he had previously taken with his family from Kilim River Tourism Jetty for RM 350. The package included several stops and attractions, such as a fish farm, Gorilla Mountain, eagle watching, Monkey Alley, mangrove sightseeing, Crocodile Cave, Bat Cave, the Andaman Sea, and Icon Kilim Geoforest Park.
One of the drivers then asked us to follow his car to the jetty. We arrived at Tanjung Rhu Jetty at around 11am. Before the tour began, the boat driver brought us to a banana stall so we could buy bananas to feed the monkeys at Monkey Alley. After we boarded the boat, the driver was about to set off without giving us life jackets. He only gave them to us after we requested them.
Our first stop was Gorilla Mountain, a rock formation that looks like a gorilla’s head when viewed from the water. The shape is formed naturally by the cliffs and is one of the interesting landmarks along the route. After that, we continued to eagle watching. We saw two types of eagles, the Brahminy kite and the white-bellied sea eagle. At one point, a boat in front of us slowed down and stirred the water, which made the eagles swoop down and catch fish right beside the boats. It was quite a sight to see.
Next was Monkey Alley. We fed the monkeys there, and one even jumped into the river and climbed onto our boat to grab the bananas. We then continued through the mangrove area, Crocodile Cave, and a fish farm. Crocodile Cave was a narrow, rocky opening surrounded by mangroves. We were able to enter because the tide was low, allowing the boat to pass through. Inside, it was calm and slightly eerie, with low light and natural rock formations along the sides. The experience was short but interesting, giving us a closer look at the quiet, untouched mangrove environment.
There is a restaurant at the fish farm, but we didn’t have lunch there this time. There are many floating restaurants in the area. On a previous visit, we ate at the Amin Floating Restaurant, and it wasn’t a good experience. We had to wait a long time, the food wasn’t tasty, and we felt it was overpriced.
We also stopped at Bat Cave. The entrance fee was RM 2 per person. My partner and I chose not to go inside because we had already visited it on a previous trip. My partner bought tickets for the others, which included the rental of a torchlight since it was very dark inside the cave. Even a phone flashlight is not bright enough to see the bats clearly. The bats can only be seen properly when a strong light is used. The torchlight helps visitors spot them hanging from the cave ceiling and moving around in the shadows.
After that, we cruised through the Andaman Sea and the Icon Kilim Geoforest Park area. Compared to our previous Kilim tour, this boat ride covered a longer route of about 25km (the earlier one was around 19km). As we passed near the Thailand border, Jon’s phone unexpectedly connected to a roaming network, which resulted in roaming charges. We wrapped up the tour around 1pm.
Overall, the private boat tour was an enjoyable and memorable experience. We had the opportunity to explore beautiful natural attractions, enjoy scenic views of the mangroves and the Andaman Sea, and experience wildlife up close. The best part of the trip was sitting on the boat while enjoying the cool wind blowing throughout the journey.

We had our late lunch at Wan Thai Restaurant, reaching there around 1.40pm. We ordered a spread of dishes to share, including green mango salad, tom yam prawn, omelette, seabass three-flavoured fish, stir-fried chicken with basil and chilli, and stir-fried baby kailan with garlic.
The mango salad was quite nice, and the mango was not too sour. The tom yam was not very spicy, though the prawns were not very fresh. The basil chicken stood out for being flavourful and enjoyable. The seabass had a rather strong fish taste, and the sauce was just average. The omelette was good, with fluffy yet slightly crispy edges, and the baby kailan was fresh and tasty.
For drinks, we started with iced water with a hint of pandan, which was quite refreshing. Later on, we added a cucumber asam boi drink, which was cool and refreshing with a light tangy sourness from the asam boi and a mild salty-sweet taste. We also had an apple juice and watermelon. The six of us shared five bowls of rice.

After lunch, it started raining, so we went to Wat Koh Wanararm. By the time we arrived, the rain had already stopped. The temple is quiet and peaceful, with Thai-style buildings and a calm atmosphere. There are many Buddha statues around the area. One of the main highlights is a large Buddha statue on a small hill, looking over the temple.

Next, we went to Dataran Lang. The weather had changed from earlier rain to very hot sunshine. Uncle and I decided to sit at a sheltered area while the others walked around and explored the place. Alan’s main reason for coming here was to see the big eagle statue, as he really likes eagles.

After Dataran Lang, everyone was sweating and feeling tired from the heat, so we went back to the hotel to freshen up. We washed up, changed into comfortable clothes, and took some time to cool down before heading out again.
Later, we walked to ZUS Coffee, which is just a 3-minute walk (about 230m) from Mercure Hotel. We ordered a burnt cheese cake, a Lychee Strawberry Cooler, and an Australian Chocolate drink. At first sip, the Lychee Strawberry Cooler tasted a bit like cough syrup, but after stirring it well, it became better and more refreshing. The Australian Chocolate was just average, as it was not very creamy or chocolatey enough. We spent some time relaxing at ZUS until 6.30pm.

While waiting for the rest to get ready for dinner at 7pm, we walked over to Pantai Cenang to catch the sunset. The area was lively, with people strolling along the beach and the waves were quite strong as they hit the shore. However, the sunset was mostly blocked by the mountain behind, so we could only see parts of the sky glowing with soft orange and pink colours. Even though we didn’t get a full view, it was still a nice and relaxing walk by the beach.

We had our dinner at Halim GP Gulai Panas Airport. Overall, the food was okay and everyone enjoyed it very much. The fried chicken was crispy and fresh. The fried fish was better on our previous visit as it was saltier. After dinner, we went back to our hotel and later came out again for a drink.

We walked to Liquid Valley Retail & Bar later in the night. Since drinking is not allowed at the beach area, we stopped there instead. I had a glass of Tiger beer while my partner had coconut water. Jon also ordered fries, but they were a bit salty. The bar was quite empty, with not much going on, so we just sat down, relaxed, and enjoyed the moment. It was a long and enjoyable day, ending on a relaxed note with good company and a simple night out.
