Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre - Sandakan, Sabah

Image
Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre is situated in Northern Borneo, around 5 hours 30 minutes drive from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The best time to see orangutan is during the feeding time at 10am and 3pm by rangers. They are fed with cabbages, bananas, carrots and other vegetables. These orangutan are living wild in the reserve and it can never be guaranteed that they will come for the feed. We only managed to see two orangutans during the feeding time. However, there's a lot of monkeys trying to steal the food from the orangutan. Besides that, visitors also have the opportunity to observe some of the adolescent orangutan currently on their final stage of rehabilitation at the outdoor nursery. The young orangutans are train on the ropes and trees as they begin transitioning back into the wild. Lockers available (free of charge) for visitors to keep their handbags or backpack. No bags or water bottles allowed because the monkeys are likely to try to snatch it from you! Whi

Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre - Sandakan, Sabah

Image
Sun bears or also known as honey bears are the smallest bears in the world. They have long tongues for licking honey from bee nests. Their favourite food are fruits and termites. They are expert climbers and make nests on trees. Sun bears can grow up to 150 cm and weigh up to 60 kgs for males. The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) was established in 2008 to give captive bears a better future. Once they have adapted to the forest, they may be released to the wild. There are 2 subspecies of sun bears - Malayan sun bears and Bornean sun bears. Malayan sun bears are found on the Asian Mainland and in Sumatra. Whereas Bornean sun bears are only found in Borneo. Bornean sun bears are half the size of Malayan sun bears. Scientists believe this is an evolutionary adaptation to food shortage. (Information obtained from BSBCC) Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre is located beside the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and both shared the same forest. All rescued sun bear

Puu Jih Shih Temple - Sandakan, Sabah

Image
Puu Jih Shih Temple is located on the hilltop with a breathtaking view of Sandakan bay. The main entrance of the temple was under renovation when we visited last month. There's no one guarding the entrance and we were a bit hesitant to go in at first because the area was very quiet when we reached there around 5.15pm. Luckily we ran into some workers who were about to leave the temple and they told us we can go ahead.  Beautiful view of Sandakan bay. It's so quiet and peaceful here... Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan

Image
Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan is located on the waterfront, just beside Sandakan Harbour Mall. Both hotel and mall shared the same parking lot. This hotel is linked to the mall at Level 1 just beside the reception area. All you need is your room access card to enter the hotel lobby from the mall. (Fyi, the parking was horrendous. Fifth floors up and down the spiral parking ramp really made me dizzy. Besides that, it was rather inconvenient when you want to drive out because you need to look for the hotel car jockey at the ground floor, pass him your parking ticket and he will verify your parking ticket at the 5th floor parking office before passing the ticket back to you.)  We stayed in a deluxe room, comes with a king size bed, study table, in room safe, hair dryer, iron, ironing board, in room slippers, LCD TV (10 TV channels including local channels and limited Astro channels), self controlled air conditioning, hot / cold shower, tea & coffee making facilities, complimen
