Bol - Kuala Lumpur

Bol serves classic Peranakan dish and this restaurant is located in Kuala Lumpur. It's best to call the restaurant directly for reservation to avoid disappointment. Deposit of RM 50 per person is required to secure your reservation. The restaurant has a warm lighting and servers are very attentive. They will describe each dish in details upon serving the food. This restaurant has a small menu. There's only six types of appetizer, five types of mains and three types of desserts for you to choose from.

Types of appetizer:
a) Rojak tart
b) Kuih otah
c) Bak foie
d) Squid ink assam octopus
e) Itek tim
f) Wing bean salad

Types of mains:
a) Bibik duck confit
b) Sea bass "Kapitan"
c) Cod assam pedas
d) Rendang wagyu
e) Buah keluak lamb shank

Types of desserts:
a) Hawthorn Melaka
b) Cendol pop
c) Parfait cha cha

We order itek tim, rojak tart, rendang wagyu, cod asam pedas, parfait cha cha and cendol pop. Their Itek tim is a type of Asian tortellini stuffed with duck meat and it's cooked in a clear soup made from flavoured broth. Duck meat are tender and moist. Tortellini is very thin, slightly chewy and not too soft. Basically the pasta is cooked al dente. However, there's a hint of sourness in the broth which I don't really fancy. I love their rojak tart. The thin crispy tart shell is filled with small cubes of Japanese cucumber, jicama, jelly fish, rojak sauce and pineapple gel. It's a one bite appetizer and the flavours just exploded in my mouth.

My partner order rendang wagyu comes with butterfly pea flower rice, wagyu beef and pickled chayote. Beef is tender and moist but the rice is a bit too hard for my liking. I enjoy my cod assam pedas very much. This dish comes with baked salted cod fish, assam pedas sauce, somen and broccolini. Fish is moist with a hint of saltiness and cooked to perfection. It has a beautiful golden crust and juicy flesh inside. Apart from that, somen (very thin Japanese noodle) is delicious. Both the fish and somen pairs perfectly with the assam pedas sauce.

Instead of one dessert I decided to order two. I love the parfait cha cha. Parfait is smooth and creamy with a hint of palm sugar flavour. The dessert comes with gingered sweet potato balls, small cubes of crunchy pineapples and snow coconut. The combination is just perfect. Cendol pop on the other hand is a gula Melaka popsicle comes with Horlicks, toasted desiccated coconut, red bean paste, sour mango sauce and popping candy. Ice cream is soft and creamy. You can feel tiny explosions in your mouth when eating the popping candy.

Overall, it's a great meal that leaves you wanting more...
