Bangkok, Thailand - Day 5 (MBK Center - Terminal 21 - EmSphere - Jodd Fairs)
Our plan for today is to go mall hopping because the weather is simply too hot to be outside. MBK Center is just a 7-minute walk (500m) from Krit Thai Residence. We chose Hongmin for our brunch based on the positive reviews of their Peking duck. We ordered their crab meat fried rice and their famous Peking duck. The price of the Peking duck includes a complimentary dish. You can choose whether the duck is cooked in black pepper sauce, crispy garlic and pepper, sweet and sour sauce, sweet mala sauce, Chinese pickled mustard, Sichuan mala, sticky brown sauce with Chinese pickled mustard soup, or pickled cabbage soup. We went with sweet and sour sauce, based on the staff's recommendation.
The crab fried rice has only a few chunks of crab flesh, but it is flavourful and slightly salty. My partner ordered a glass of Thai milk tea. However, it was not creamy, diluted and tasted average. The worst dish of the day is the Peking duck. It is served with only the duck skin, and it tastes rancid. The tastes were so awful that we decided to confront the waiter. We were a bit hesitant when they stated they'd change it for us and when they did, the new dish tasted the same. The staff was very friendly and even offered us complimentary tea, but we politely declined.
The sweet and sour duck dish doesn't taste superb either. In the end we were unable to finish both dishes. When we paid our bill, the waiter apologized again about the meal and waived the duck dish, but they charged us extra for the mineral water we had previously cancelled.

The MBK Center is like a bazaar and there's nothing much for us to see or buy. So, after a quick stroll, we went to Terminal 21 and met up with my partner's friend. We took the BTS from National Stadium Station to Asok Station (THB 35 per person). The station stops right in front of the mall. Each floor of the mall is themed after tourist destinations across the world, including the Caribbean, Rome, Paris, Tokyo, London, Istanbul, San Francisco and Hollywood. The same concept applies to the bathrooms.

We had our late lunch at Rung Rueang Pork Noodle. We rode one stop on the BTS from Asok Station to Phrom Phong (THB 17 per person) and walked for about 6 minutes (350m) to get to the shop. There are two shops by the same name adjacent to each other, and we ended up at the smaller-sized shop. There are four steps to choose your noodles:
Step 1 - Choose either tom yum with soup, tom yum with no soup, clear soup or no soup
Step 2 - Choose either sen-lek (rice noodles similar in size to linguini), ba-mee (egg noodles), sen-mee (vermicelli), sen-yai (Thai wide rice noodles), woon-sen (glass noodles) or kiam-yee (rat tail noodles)
Step 3 - Choose either mixed, no pork entrails, pork only, fish ball & minced pork or fish only
Step 4 - Choose either small, medium or large
My partner and I shared a bowl of clear soup sen-mee with fish balls and minced pork. The soup is flavourful, and the sen-mee is soft and easy to eat. The fish ball is smooth with a bouncy feel. Apart from that, the meatball is tasty too. We tried our friend's tom yum soup and it was too spicy for me. The sen-yai has a chewy texture that's not overly firm. I also ordered plum juice, which was more refreshing than my partner's orange juice, which was a little acidic but tasted fresh.

We then walked to EmSphere mall, which was beautifully decorated for Christmas and even had a gourmet winter wonder square selling food and Christmas decorations. Butterbear has taken the internet by storm and won the hearts of many, including our friend. The shop is right next to the mall entrance, and people were queuing to buy biscuits and other products from the shop.
We waited for them at Pang Cha and ordered royal Thai milk tea snowflake, which consists of soft bread, Thai tea boba, crystal boba, black Thai tea boba, whipped cream and almond flakes. Yuan ordered Thai Southern's roti with Thai milk tea sauce. The roti's condensed milk with Thai tea flavour is too sweet for my taste. The snowflake serving was large enough to be shared by five people. Overall taste was acceptable, but I think the pricing is a little high.

We decided to have our dinner at Jodd Fairs. It's a night market that operates from 5pm to 12am with a wide variety of food choices, clothing, decorations, homemade crafts and even a temporary tattoo booth. We took the BTS skytrain from Emporium Mall Station to Asok Station (THB 17 per person) and then took the MTR from Sukhumvit to Thailand Cultural Centre (THB 110 per person). The night market has moved to a new location, adjacent to Big C Place Ratchada and just a short walking distance from Thailand Cultural Centre MRT Station.
We decided to have our dinner at Kung Thep. We ordered pineapple fried rice, stir-fried morning glory, BBQ lava ribs, steamed seabass with lime, tom yum river shrimp noodle soup, stir-fried cabbage with fish sauce and baked egg crab with glass noodles. The tom yum is a bit too spicy for my liking, and the stir-fried morning glory is a little old. We all agree that the baked egg crab with glass noodles at Somsakpuob tastes better.
Besides that, the steamed fish (seabass) has a strong fishy taste and the meat is very soft. The dish that I enjoyed most that night is the BBQ lava ribs. The meat is flavourful and tender. Overall, the dish was enjoyable, but it didn't leave a lasting impression. There's no place for you to wash your hands in the restaurant. Basically, you have to go to the toilet in the basement car park and pay THB 5 per entry.

We took a Grab ride back to our hotel (Grab fare - THB 336) and walked to the nearby 7-Eleven to buy some snacks. We bought a packet of longan, Nestle strawberry ice cream and a cup of Coke. My partner then went for a foot massage with his friend at the massage parlor next to our hotel.
