Taiwan - Day 7 (Ximending - Taipei 101)

Ay-Chung flour rice noodles is one of the most famous street food in Ximending. There's no proper tables and chairs. So basically, you need to stand and eat. There's always a queue but it's fast moving. The "mee suah" or rice noodles is served in a paper bowl together with a plastic spoon. Slurpy smooth noodles served with intestines in a sweet and flavourful broth. It's nice to have a bowl of hot slurpy noodles on a cold day. We slept through the morning, skipped our breakfast at Diary of Ximen and had this rice noodles for lunch.

Just 2 minutes walk from Ay-Chung flour rice noodles, we saw this Taiwan No.1 fried chicken since 1973. We bought combo meal no. 3 comes with their signature popcorn chicken and crispy deep fried squid (NT$ 145). Crispy and juicy fried chicken. Fried squid was ok but we couldn't finish the whole packet.

We feel thirsty after eating the fried food and decided to look for a refreshing drink to quench our thirst. We saw this shop "50嵐" just 2 minutes walk from J & G Fried Chicken and bought a cup of plum & kumquat juice. It's nice and very refreshing.

This beautiful Tianhou temple is located near the Ximending shopping district, just 3 minutes walk from 50嵐. It's a small temple sandwiched between two modern store.

On the way to Yu’s Almond Tofu, we passed by Red House and it's under renovation. Yu's Almond Tofu is known for their Almond milk dessert. The whole shop smelled like almond. We ordered sweet almond tofu in hot soup. The tofu was nice. It has a soft and slightly chewy texture. Soup comes with tiny pieces of chopped almonds but it has a very strong smell and taste of almonds. We couldn't finish the whole bowl. Guess we preferred almond nuts more than almond soup. This shop is just 5 minutes walk from Tianhou Temple.

Lao Wang Ji beef noodle shop is just 2 minutes walk from Yu's Almond Tofu. Right opposite this shop, there's another beef noodles shop but we decided to try this shop instead. We shared a bowl of beef noodles. Beef was tender and juicy. Beef noodle soup tasted so-so and the noodles have a chewy texture. I prefer a slippery softer noodles generally.

We took MRT from Ximen Station to Taipei 101 / World Trade Center Station. We purchased the MRT token at the counter - NT$ 50 for a single journey ticket and boarded Line 3 or Songshan - Xindian Line at Ximen Station. Then, we switched to Line 2 or Tamsui - Xinyi Line at Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall and Taipei 101 is just right in front of Taipei 101 / World Trade Center Station exit 4.

We had our dinner at Din Tai Fung located inside Taipei 101 Mall. We ordered pork chop fried rice with egg (you can choose either white rice or brown rice) and steamed shrimp with pork shao mai. Service was prompt and friendly. There's a free flow of complimentary Chinese tea as well. We hang around Taipei 101 Mall and supposed our plan was to visit Raohe Night Market at night. However, my partner wasn't feeling very well and had a mild abdominal pain after our dinner. Ended up we went back to our hotel so that he can take a rest. I took a short walk alone around Ximending area. It was a cold night and the entire street was full of people. Ximending was our last stop and we took an early flight back home the next day.

(Total bill at Din Tai Fung: NT$ 451 including 10% service charges)

Note: NT$ 1 = RM 0.1460
