Taiwan - Day 4 (Shifen Old Street - Shenkeng Old Street - Shilin Night Market)
We slept in and skipped breakfast at La Vie Motel on the second day. Sorry to say that their breakfast wasn't impressive enough to wake us up. We checked out before 12pm and waited for our friend to pick us up. Again, we had another fabulous lunch at a restaurant in Linkou District.
Oysters with "yau char kwai" (Chinese crullers)
Stir-fried noodles
Vegetables
Fried rice
Steamed chicken
Fish
Soup
Pork belly
Stir-fried intestine with onions
Fried dry shrimp
Seaweeds
Stir-fried pork intestines with gingers and chili
After lunch, our friend decided to bring us to Shifen Old Street located in Pingxi District. A journey that took us about one hour from Linkou District. Shifen Old Street is one of the popular tourist attraction whereby majority of the tourists will release sky lanterns with their wishlist written on it at the railway track. It's a live railway track and yet people still release their sky lanterns there! Apart from sky lanterns, there's a number of stalls selling snacks and souvenirs.
Jingan suspension bridge is located behind Shifen Station, a bridge that connects Shifen and Nanshan village. Another attraction is the Shifen waterfall which is located 20 minutes walking distance or 6 minutes drive from Shifen Old Street. We didn't continue our journey to Shifen waterfall because it started to rain by the time we reached the Shifen waterfall suspension bridge.

We had our dinner at Shenkeng Old Street (45 minutes drive from Shifen Old Street) famous for its tofu-related food. There's a row of restaurants all selling various tofu dishes. Stinky tofu is a form of fermented tofu that has a strong odor like rotting garbage. This is my second time trying stinky tofu. My first stinky tofu experience was 10 years back in Taiwan too. That time, I traveled with a group of friends and we had it at Raohe Market. Stinky tofu actually doesn't taste as bad as it smells but I wouldn't say that it tastes good either.

After our tofu dinner we dropped by Shilin Night Market, largest night market in Taipei. Shilin Night Market is about 40 minutes drive from Shenkeng Old Street. First stall we saw that has a long queue was this Taiwan Original Cake. I've never tried it in Malaysia and since we're here, we decided to give it a try. It's a simple homemade old-fashion egg sponge cake but the queue was crazy. It's nice and fluffy but too eggy for me.

Next, we bought a box of muachi - glutinous rice flour balls sprinkled with roasted peanuts. It's soft, gummy and sticky. Muachi tasted good when it's still warm.

Mango ice is one of the must try dessert in Taiwan. It has a good mango flavour and pieces of mango taste good. Most importantly it's sweet and juicy. Ice cream was good too. Full of fresh mango flavours. Besides that red bean soup, one of the common Chinese dessert taste good too. They add in the so called rich material which is made of taro balls. Perfect way to end the night.
