We were in prison for 20 minutes!
Don't get us wrong. We did not commit an offence to be imprisoned. We were just unlucky to find ourselves locked in one of the prisoner's bathroom while wandering around Fremantle Prison, Perth. We didn't sign up for any tour package and decided to walk around the gatehouse. Entry to the gatehouse is free of charge which includes the Convict Cafe, gift shop, prison gallery and an interactive visitor centre.
There are 5 types of Fremantle Prison tours which were displayed at the entrance of the prison gate - Prison day tours (Adult price: $19), Prison day tours package (Adult price: $26), Torchlight tour (Adult price: $25), Tunnels tour (Adult price: $60) and All tour pass (Adult price: $99)
We went to the prison gallery which is open to public from 10am to 5pm daily, gift shop and the interactive visitor centre. While we wandered around the gatehouse, we stepped into a gallery as the gate was open. We hang around the gallery and walked into a room which used to be the prisoner's bathroom. Suddenly we heard a thud, we turned and found the bathroom gate closed. The gate was locked! We couldn't find any keys hanging nearby and we couldn't pushed open the gate. We're trapped!
We waited patiently inside the prisoner's bathroom, hoping for someone to passed by. Finally we saw an old couple walked into the gallery. We were so happy to see them. We screamed for help and the friendly couple helped us to contact the warden. He came back shortly and told us that we have to wait until 8.30pm for the warden to come and unlock the gate which was another 4 hours to go. We stood there frozen and said nooooo.... Then he let out a big grin and said it was a joke! The warden was on his way. We thanked the old couple wholeheartedly as without them we might be trapped for another few hours?
The warden came shortly with the keys. He apologized and told us that his colleague supposed to lock this gallery as it is not open to public for free. He said once the gate is close it will lock automatically and you will need a key to unlock it. We thanked him and walked out happily from the gallery. However, how we were locked inside the prisoner's bathroom still remain a mystery...
