Mulu, Sarawak - Day 4 (Final day)

It was our final morning in Mulu, and I had breakfast on my own at around 8.45am before the rest of the gang showed up. I had the fried egg again, but this time, I asked the chef to cook it until the edges were nice and crispy. It turned out much better than the ones I had over the last two days. The chef looked a little unfriendly at first, but after a while, he warmed up and started chatting with me. He asked where I was from, and we ended up having a short conversation while he prepared the food. Turns out he was from KL and had previously worked at Sutera Harbour in Sabah.

The breakfast spread was more or less the same throughout all three days, so there wasn’t much variety, but I still found a few things that I enjoyed. The pandan nasi lemak was good as usual, especially with the nice and crispy anchovies. I also liked the French Village bread, which was soft and fresh, as well as the chicken sausage. The porridge was warm and comforting, and I still enjoyed the hash brown even though we had exactly the same thing for breakfast three days in a row! On the other hand, the green curry was quite spicy, and the chicken had a slightly powdery texture that wasn’t quite to my liking. The fried vermicelli was also a little too salty for me. Apart from that, the fruit selection was another letdown, as there wasn’t much variety to choose from.

After breakfast, I walked back to the room at around 10.15am to start packing. We checked out before 11am, and since our rooms were connecting, Vincent and Brad came over to hang out in our bigger room. Their flight was later than ours, so they stayed back to enjoy the extra space while we left for the airport. We took the 11am shuttle, and it was only about a five-minute drive from the resort to the airport.

When we reached the airport, we bumped into the same guy who had picked us up when we first arrived in Mulu. To my surprise, he still remembered me and asked whether I had seen any leeches. His question immediately brought back a funny memory from the day we arrived. When I first met the resort staff, I had asked whether we would encounter any leeches during our Mulu cave explorations.  I was honestly quite scared of them and wanted to know what I was getting myself into. I guess not many people ask him about leeches, because he actually remembered my question a few days later! It was a small thing, but it made me laugh and was a nice little moment to have before we left Mulu.

We then headed over to check in, and the process was fast and smooth, taking less than 10 minutes. Before entering the boarding area, we had to go through immigration and a security check. The immigration counter was so small that you could easily miss it if you weren’t paying attention. Just before boarding at 12.25pm, Vincent and Brad arrived at the airport and managed to bid us farewell one last time. They were heading to Miri for a night before making their way back to KL.

After saying our goodbyes for the second time, we boarded our flight. The aircraft was a small two-seater arrangement on each side, which made it feel quite different from a larger commercial flight. Our flight departed at 12.40pm, and the journey to Kota Kinabalu took about 55 minutes. We were served a vanilla muffin and a cookie, with apple or orange juice as the only drink choices. There was no drinking water offered this time. We eventually arrived at Kota Kinabalu International Airport at around 1.20pm.

Looking back, I’m glad I decided to join the cave exploration. To be honest, I was a little hesitant at first because I was worried that the rainforest trail would be muddy and that we might encounter leeches. I was already imagining myself checking my shoes and legs every few minutes, and I even considered wearing leech socks! But in the end, it wasn’t as bad as I had expected. The trails were quite manageable, and there were proper steps and walkways along the way, so I didn’t feel like we were trekking through a difficult rainforest trail. The whole experience was much easier than I had imagined, and I’m glad I didn’t let my worries about leeches stop me from going.
