Malaysia road trip - Day 15 (Malacca)

We started our day in Melaka with a local favourite, chicken rice balls for lunch at Huang Chang Chicken Rice Restaurant. The chicken rice balls were soft, fragrant, and flavourful, making them enjoyable even on their own. The chicken was served warm, but the breast meat was a little dry and didn't taste particularly fresh. My partner enjoyed the meal more, especially with the drumstick cut, which was juicier and more satisfying. We also ordered an iced barley and Chinese tea. The tea was, as usual, refreshing, while the iced barley was still much sweeter than expected despite our request for less sugar.

(Total bill - RM 19)

Next stop was Nyonya Secrets. We ordered the nyonya cendol, and unfortunately most of the kuih, ondeh cake, and laksa were already sold out by around 1pm. The menu is huge, with plenty of Nyonya favourites to choose from. The cendol itself was very good. It came with a creamy santan base, topped with cendol and red beans for added texture. A small pot of gula Melaka was served separately, allowing us to pour in as much as we liked and adjust the sweetness to our preference. The gula Melaka was the highlight, with a deep caramelised flavour that complemented the rich santan beautifully. Overall, it was a very satisfying dessert, and the staff were polite and friendly throughout our visit.

After our cendol stop at Nyonya Secrets, we drove to The Daily Fix, a hidden cafe tucked inside a traditional shophouse along Jonker Street in the heart of Melaka’s old town. My partner dropped me off first before heading off to look for parking. Finding parking around Jonker Street was challenging, and he eventually parked at a nearby car park for RM 10. Meanwhile, I waited about 20 minutes before we were shown to a table.

We ordered the durian pancake, stuffed with thick durian cream and finished with a dash of gula Melaka, along with an avocado gula Melaka drink made with fresh milk, avocado, and gula Melaka. The avocado drink was a little underwhelming, as the gula Melaka flavour was not strong enough. Instead, it mostly tasted like blended avocado with a mild cocoa-like flavour. It might have worked better as a pure avocado drink without the added sweetness. The durian pancake, on the other hand, had a slightly crispy exterior with a soft and fluffy interior. The durian cream was mildly sweet, almost as if it had been mixed with sugar.

We went back to the hotel around 3pm and headed out again for dinner at 7pm. This time we went to Restaurant Lee Swee Meng. The restaurant uses a queue system where customers take a queue number and wait to be called before being seated. So there was a bit of a wait before we got a table. Most of the tables are quite large, so even though there were only two of us, we were seated at a spacious table. We ordered a small portion of rice, kangkung, claypot yam chicken, salted egg yolk prawn with cheese, a can of Coke, and a glass of warm water. The staff also mentioned upfront that the salted egg yolk prawn with cheese could be a little watery, while the claypot yam chicken tends to lean on the sweeter side.

The prawns were fresh and well-cleaned, with the digestive tract removed, making them very easy to eat. My partner really enjoyed this dish. For me, I still preferred Kedai Makanan Rasa Lain in Ipoh, as their sauce was thicker and cheesier. Here, the cheese flavour was quite mild and not very strong. The claypot yam chicken was indeed on the sweeter side. The chicken was flavourful and served boneless, while the yam was soft and well-cooked. However, the black fungus was slightly firm. The kangkung was young and fresh, though it leaned towards the saltier side. Both the salted egg yolk prawn with cheese and kangkung were quite salty, leaving us feeling rather thirsty after the meal. All the dishes were served in claypots, allowing us to enjoy the food while it remained warm throughout the meal.

My partner’s friend recommended this place, saying that it had the best chicken wings in Johor, so we decided to give it a try. We went to Restaurant Chop Beeng Cheong to check out their famous chicken wings. They are known to sell out by 9pm, so we headed there earlier to make sure we could still get them. Since we were still quite full from our earlier dinner, we only shared a cup of iced barley with less sugar. The chicken wings were juicy and paired well with the chili sauce, but they were quite salty for our taste. They also had a noticeable five-spice flavour, which gave them a unique taste. While the wings were well-cooked and had good texture, we personally didn’t find them as impressive as expected.

After our chicken wing stop, we headed to Jonker Street around 9pm to experience the night market atmosphere. The Jonker Street Night Market only operates on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, transforming the street into a lively stretch filled with food stalls, souvenir vendors, and crowds of visitors. We came across a stall selling guava and decided to give it a try. The guava was fresh and crunchy, but we still felt that the guava from the truck at SS2 tasted better.

Our final stop was Justberrys Dessert House, located about an 8-minute drive (2.7km) from Jonker Street Night Market. After going through the menu, we decided to order the Bingsu rainbow fruity. The desserts were priced slightly on the higher side, so we were curious to see whether it would be worth the price. The shaved ice was milk-based and topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, honeydew, rock melon, watermelon, and dragon fruit. The vanilla ice cream was creamy and smooth, while the fresh fruits added a refreshing touch and different textures to the dessert. However, the overall experience was just average for us. Although the bingsu came in a generous portion, the flavours did not stand out as much as we had hoped, and we felt it was a little expensive for what it offered. We were unable to finish the entire bowl and ended up mainly eating the fruits towards the end.
