Crowne Plaza Penang Straits City Hotel - Butterworth, Penang

Crowne Plaza Penang Straits City Hotel is located in Butterworth. The hotel is just a 6-minute walk (450m) from Butterworth's popular street food, Rojak Tonggek (fruit skewers). We decided to stay in this hotel before departing for Alor Setar the next day.

The room comes with a king-size bed, a sofa bed, a smart TV, an in-room safe, a hair dryer, a mini fridge, a yukata, two pairs of disposable slippers, a small coffee table, air conditioning with individual temperature control, complimentary Wi-Fi, two complimentary sealed (glass bottle) drinking water, coffee or tea-making facilities and complete toiletries. However, there's no iron or ironing board.

The room is clean and modern. Besides that, the bed is comfy and nice. The bathroom is very spacious and I like the open wardrobe concept positioned inside the bathroom with a sliding door. Water pressure is superb and the temperature is really hot. The nicest shower is one with strong water pressure and a continuous flow of hot water.

The hotel facilities include a fitness centre with views of Penang Island, an outdoor swimming pool and a club lounge on the 23rd floor. The guest car park is available from levels 3 to 7 (multilevel car park) with the reception lobby on level 8. To access the guest rooms, fitness centre, swimming pool and club lounge, you have to use the hotel lift on level 8, which requires a key card. Complimentary parking is available for hotel guests.

Our stay includes a buffet breakfast for two people. Breakfast is served from 6.30am until 10.30am. As usual, I walked down alone for breakfast, as sleepyhead chose not to eat. Since breakfast doesn't taste good at all, he made a smart choice. The fried egg is underwhelming and the hash brown is too oily. The porridge is warm and fried anchovies are hard and chewy. The cook must have forgotten to add salt since the macaroni and cheese had no taste at all. Besides that, the curry chicken is a turnoff as the curry powder is too strong. Overall, it is a lovely stay, but not for the cuisine.
