LA Hotel - Tawau, Sabah
LA Hotel is strategically located in the town of Tawau and easily accessible to eating places. There's Covid-19 temperature screening upon entry to their hotel and room floors can only be accessed with the room card key. We decided to stay here for three nights after our Mabul-Kapalai Island trip. At the reception desk, we were asked to choose either king size bed or two single beds. We were told that the room rate for a king size bed is RM 148 per night and for two single beds is RM 138 per night. We preferred the king size bed and when we entered our room, the first thing I noticed was the room smells like cigarettes. Then we realized they gave us a smoking room. We were a bit tired and lazy to request for a room change but there were just too many issues with the room.
We found out that the bathroom sink is clogged and there's a half dead cockroach on the toilet floor. There's no way we're going to wait for the maintenance people to come and unclog the bathroom sink. Hence, we decided to request for a room change. We were told that they do not have any vacant rooms that comes with a king size bed. We were left with no other option but to go with the single beds. Glad that the new room is clean except for the faulty bathroom lock and in-room safe. Apart from that, their uneven bathroom floor caused water to pool up in a small pockets just right in front of the toilet bowl. Imagine your feet get wet and cold when you are trying to do your business in the morning. Hahaha...
Our room comes with two single beds, wall mounted LCD TV, working desk, in-room safe, wall mounted hair dryer, extra pillow, disposable slippers, coffee or tea making facilities, 2 complimentary bottle of drinking water, self controlled air conditioning, bathroom with cold/hot shower and toiletries. There's two wall mounted soap dispenser and both the liquid colour looks the same to me. I presume both the liquid can be used for body and hair wash as there's no label on it. Water pressure in the shower is very good and most importantly water is hot enough. The hotel has limited TV channels - TV1, TV2, TV3, HBO and Fox Sport. Their TV screen flickers and volume fluctuates all the time.
One of LA Hotel's main attraction is the Roof Garden Lounge located on the 10th floor. It's an open air concept with great view of Tawau. Somehow both of us not too keen on having our dinner there. Ended up we just took a peek before we head out for dinner. Overall, we enjoyed our stay despite all the issues as the location is good. However they should improve their communication skills. Firstly, before we checked into the hotel room they should have asked whether we preferred a smoking or non-smoking room. Secondly, if there's a change of room rate during a room change they should inform us in advance.
On our last day when we checked out, they billed us RM 148 per night for two single beds which initially we were told it's RM 138. When we asked about the price difference, the staff told us that we stayed at a higher floor thus the room rate is different. (The initial smoking room that they gave us was on the 3rd floor and they moved us to the 4th floor). Anyway, I was not in the mood to argue with them and we just let it be...
