Restoran Soon Lok - Puchong

We had our early reunion dinner one week before Chinese New Year since everyone is busy with their own lives. My brother in law suggested this restaurant since charcoal roasted duck is one of their popular dish. He ordered eight main dishes - Yusheng, pork, yam basket, stir fry mushrooms with vegetables, fish maw with sea cucumber, mushrooms and broccoli, steamed fish, roasted pork and charcoal roasted duck with a total bill of RM 400 including a free dessert.

Our first dish of the night is Yusheng or yee sang also commonly known as "lou sang" (prosperity toss), usually served on the 7th day of Chinese New Year. It is a type of Teochew-style raw fish salad consists of raw fish (salmon slices), pomelo, pepper, shredded carrots, green radish, white radish, red pickled ginger, toasted sesame seeds, peanut crumbs, variety of sauces and deep fried flour crisps in the shape of golden pillows. This dish symbolize good luck for the new year and each ingredient has its own meaning. I quite enjoy this dish because it's a perfect combination. You get to taste the combination of sweetness, sourness and crunchiness.

All diners need to stand up, tossed the salad up in the air using a chopsticks and say various auspicious wishes out loud. The higher the salad is thrown in the air, the higher chances of wishes being granted. That explained why the table was a mess after that but that didn't stop us from having a good time. Muahahaha... this is the time we can actually play with our food!

My favourite dish from this restaurant are the charcoal roasted duck and stir fry mushrooms with vegetables. Their charcoal roasted duck is the best that I had so far. Crispy duck skin with tender juicy meat. Most importantly there's no gamey taste on it. Besides that, I love their stir fry mushrooms with vegetables. Healthy and tasty dish. Overall we enjoyed the dinner very much except for the white rice which I find it a bit hard for my liking. We end the meal with a bowl of cold refreshing canned fruit - rambutan stuffed with pineapple, served with mochi.

(Total bill: RM 400)

Latest update - We visited this restaurant again yesterday, 12st Jan 2017. To our disappointment, the charcoal roasted duck doesn't taste good anymore. Roasted duck skin was not crispy at all. Apart from that, roasted pork doesn't taste fresh. One of the waitress who took order from us was a bit arrogant and lack of warmth. Most probably we will think twice in future before stepping in this restaurant.
