HelicoNia Hotel - Penang
If you are looking for a budget hotel in George Town Penang, you may consider HelicoNia hotel. Located next to Hotel Sentral George Town Penang, HelicoNia Hotel is within walking distance to Lorong Selamat (famous char kueh teow) and Penang Road famous Teochew Chendul. I have tried both the char kueh teow and Teochew Chendul and I think it's overrated. One plate of Lorong Selamat char kueh teow cost more than RM 10 while a bowl of Teochew Chendul cost RM 2.50. The last time I had Lorong Selamat char kueh teow was one year ago and it was very salty. This time I can taste the burned wok flavour. I believe you can get a better char kueh teow elsewhere in Penang at a cheaper price.
It was an impromptu business trip to Penang. We managed to get a really cheap over the weekend airfare (roughly RM 40 per person) from Kota Kinabalu to Penang via Air Asia Big on the day itself. By the time we checked in HelicoNia Hotel it was almost midnight. We stayed in a deluxe queen room with no window. The room comes with a queen size bed, LCD TV, in room safe box (malfunction), limited Astro Channel (Wah Lai Toi, Disney, AXN, TLC & FOX Sports), study table, open wardrobe, complimentary internet connection, self controlled air conditioning, 2 complimentary bottles of drinking water, kettle (no complimentary tea or coffee) and bathroom with hot/cold shower.
Small room but clean and comfortable. Bathroom is clean but the sliding bathroom door with no lock makes it a little less privacy if you are sharing a room with a friend. Shower with hot water was great and the water remain hot even after a long shower. However, there's no proper partition between the toilet and the shower area. Ended up the entire bathroom was soaking wet after a shower. Limited parking space (10 parking bays as a first come first serve basis).
Hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. Overall it was a pleasant budget stay since we don't spend much time in the hotel room. (We checked out the next morning before 9am)
