Kuching, Sarawak (II) - Day 4 (Kuching Town)

Since SOCAR isn't available in Kuching, we planned to rent a car from Trevo on our second last day there and return it the following day at the airport before returning to Kota Kinabalu. The car will be delivered to our hotel by 4pm, and someone will be scheduled to pick it up from the airport the next day at the same time. The car rental is RM 150 for 24 hours, and you must return the fuel to them based on your usage.

In the late morning, we took a Grab ride to Yeow Kee Kopitiam for our brunch (Grab fare - RM 9). While deciding what to eat at this coffee shop, I came across this Ding Bin Hu stall. When I asked the staff what she was serving, she tried to explain. However, I couldn't understand, so she reacted angrily with the tsk sound. I eventually ordered vermicelli fish ball soup noodles from the next stall.

They ran out of kueh teow and instead of vermicelli soup, they served me the dry version. I waited almost half an hour for this bowl of noodles. The vermicelli looks like glass noodles and has an oily, bland flavour. The soup has a distinct seaweed flavour, but the fish paste is too firm for my liking. The chili is spicy and nice. However, I didn't manage to finish the glass noodles and fish paste.

My partner, on the other hand, ordered kampua noodles, which are a popular dish in Sibu and Bintulu. He doesn't particularly like it, but I find it acceptable because the noodle texture is softer compared to kolo mee and it's flavourful. Apart from that, they have lean char siew or bbq pork. My partner also ordered three sticks of satay and a pair of chicken wings. The satay meat is lean and tough, with a sweeter taste. Their satay gravy lacks umph, and we couldn't really taste the peanut flavour. The chicken wings taste average and are slightly sweet. My partner had a glass of teh c ping without sugar, which was slightly sour and had a strong tea flavour. We were planning to try the kolo mee and laksa, but they appear to be closed on Sunday.

After lunch, we walked to Cocopuri, a 10-minute walk (750m) from Yeow Kee Kopitiam. We were the only customers and they allowed free samplings of their ice cream. All of their ice creams are coconut-based. I tried their coconut, chocolate and gula apong ice creams, but I still prefer their gula apong flavour. So I got a single scoop of gula apong ice cream with a waffle. I find the ice cream to be a little sweet, but it's flavourful and creamy, with a taste of coconut. Unfortunately, the waffle is cooked unevenly. Some areas are still soft, while others have burned slightly and tasted bitter. However, the waffles are thin, with some crispy parts.

Instead of taking Grab back to our hotel, we decided to stop at Chai Song Soon coffee shop, which serves pork leg rice (Grab fare - RM 8). We walked down Jalan Padungan and I bought a packet of sugar cuttlefish from Loong Kee before returning to our hotel. My partner went for a swim before our Trevo car arrived at 4pm.

Our Trevo car arrived on time, and after inspection, we drove to Jerald's Cookies and Desserts. We chose to check out this shop because it had a very high rating on Google reviews. The shop is very small, with only a few dining tables available outside. The staff was very friendly, and they gave us complimentary samples of their hazelnut, double chocolate and butter cookies. I find the cookies to be a little too sweet, except for the butter cookies. I ordered their Ferrero Rocher Cake Box, but unfortunately, I find it to be overly sweet for me. We were unable to finish it and had to toss it away.

Our next stop is Sunny Hill Ice Cream. There are plenty of tables where you can sit and enjoy your ice cream. However, the environment is rather hot. I tried both the chocolate and vanilla ice cream in a cup. Although ice cream is smooth, we find it too sweet. Sadly, we had to throw away the ice cream for the second time in Kuching.

We decided to check out Hui Sing Hawker Centre this time because we didn't get to eat the food during our last visit. My partner ordered pork and chicken satay. The chicken satay texture is very soft compared to the pork satay. However, the pork satay is well-marinated, and it tastes a little saltier than the chicken satay. The satay gravy is pretty tasty, with a strong peanut flavour.

Before heading to Rock Road Seafood Restaurant for dinner, we stopped by Storm Car Wash, which uses a machine to wash and accepts QR payments without the need for workers. It operates 24 hours a day.

One of Rock Road Seafood Restaurant's signature dishes is the Hainanese prawns with buns. Besides that, we also ordered a small bowl of shark fin and crab meat soup, as well as pan-fried oyster omellete in Teo Chew style. The shark fin and crab meat soup looks unappealing, but the taste is okay. The Hainanese prawns come with seven prawns and seven buns. I like the fried buns since they are slightly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The prawns are fresh, with a hint of spice and sweetness. However, the dish is quite oily.

This is the first time I had the pan-fried oyster omellete in Teo Chew style. The dish is huge and comes with a dipping sauce that is too salty for me. The omellete is crispy on the outside yet slightly chewy on the inside. However, the dish must be eaten hot; otherwise, it becomes oily and soft when cold. The staff are friendly and the service is prompt.

Total bill - RM 145.10 (including 5% service charge and 6 % service tax)

Siniawan Night Market is a 30-minute drive (21km) from Rock Road Seafood Restaurant. Some of the roads leading to the Siniawan Night Market are dark and narrow. We passed a cemetery and a school before arriving at the night market. The street is decorated with Chinese lanterns and there is a large selection of street snacks. Apart from that, there is also a homestay, a Chinese temple and a police station.

We stopped to check out Farley Mall on the way back to our hotel. There is an open-air food court with many eatery stalls, including Ceylonese. However, the food court closes at 8.30pm.

Since we have our own vehicle, we decided to take a drive and check out Taka Patisserie and Affogato. I wasn't impressed with the pastries at Taka Patisserie. Instead, I was tempted to try the ice cream from Affogato, but I am afraid of its sweetness. So I asked the staff, and she confirmed that it was quite sweet. I ended up not trying their ice cream because I didn't want to waste any more ice cream that day. They also have onde onde cake, but I think the colour looks too artificial to me.

So guess what? We returned to Ceylonese for the fourth time during our stay in Kuching. This time, instead of one set of tandoori chicken, we ordered two, along with a cheese naan. At the end of the day, what matters most is that we are both happy with our food choices. Happy tummy, happy us!
