Shenzhen - Day 2 (Shenzhen Science Museum - Shenzhen Museum - King Glory Plaza)

Based on the weather forecast, it is likely to rain every day in Shenzhen for a week. The forecast was spot on because it was pouring rain in the morning. We went next door to have brunch with Jlo and his wife at 11am. On a rainy day, a bowl of hot noodle soup is the perfect comfort meal. We'll each choose and share a meal that we like. So I picked beef brisket kueh teow soup, while my partner chose duck soup. Jlo, the wonton fanatic, chose wonton noodles, while his wife chose roast duck with BBQ pork rice. The wonton tasted delicious with fresh prawns and pork, but the noodles were bland. The beef brisket is tender, but the soup is decent. I like the duck meat, but not the BBQ pork. Whereas for my partner, he enjoyed the duck soup very much.

After our brunch, we walked to Luohu Station and along the way, I stopped at McDonald's for ice cream. I managed to finish it before we entered the metro.

The best thing to do when it's raining is to visit the museum. So we took the metro from Luohu to Science Museum Station (¥ 3 per person). Once we came out of Science Museum Station, we took Exit A and then turned left. The museum is just a short walk from the metro station. The Shenzhen Science Museum has three floors and admission is free. However, the majority of the displays are broken and the toilet is rather smelly. We just spent 40 minutes in the Shenzhen Science Museum, and it's definitely not worth our time.

It's still raining when we come out of the Shenzhen Science Museum and instead of taking the metro, we decided to take Didi to the Shenzhen Museum. Admission is free. However, we have to register our names before entering the museum. The museum is open from 10am to 6pm and closed on Monday.

There are three levels:
1) 1st floor - Thematic Exhibition Hall
2) 2nd floor - Ancient Shenzhen Exhibition Hall, Modern Shenzhen Exhibition Hall and Shenzhen Folk Culture Exhibition Hall
3) 3rd floor - The Exhibition Hall of the Reform and Opening-up History in Shenzhen and The Exhibition Hall of Shenzhen Before the Reform and Opening-up

They have this special exhibition of Pingcheng and Yungang Grottoes Art in the Northern Wei Dynasty from December 6th, 2023, until May 24th, 2024, in the museum lobby. Overall, it's a good place to avoid the rain and well worth a visit.

We spent almost two hours in the museum and as we were leaving, we noticed a cafe. We stopped there for a snack and ordered an original egg waffle, grilled sausage and royal milk tea pearl. Sadly, the egg waffles are soft and the grilled sausages have a lot of tendons. Aside from that, their milk tea is nothing spectacular. It's not sweet and the pearls are soft and chewy.

We took Didi back to our hotel (Fare - ¥ 21.07) and relaxed in our hotel room before meeting Jlo and his friend for dinner at King Glory Plaza.

(Total bill - ¥ 38)

Royal milk tea pearl - ¥ 16

Jlo's friend named John, walked us to King Glory Plaza from our hotel. The mall is a short walk from the Paco Hotel. John brought us to this Hakka Yu Restaurant, which is famous for their salt-baked chicken. He came earlier to get a number because the wait time for a seat is at least two hours. Finally, we were seated and his friend ordered six dishes for the five of us. The best dish of the night is none other than the salt-baked chicken. The chicken skin is chewy and the meat is tender.

Thai seabass is also pretty tasty. The sauce is sweet and tangy. The fish is moist on the inside yet crispy on the outside. However, I don't particularly enjoy the vegetable soup or tofu dish since they are a little bitter. The eel pot tasted average, with one bone running down the middle. Thanks to John, we get to enjoy a delicious meal without having to queue much on the weekends.

Honeymoon Dessert is a dessert that originated in Hong Kong and has a branch in Shenzhen. I am a dessert person, and the perfect time for dessert is after a meal. So we headed over to Honeymoon Dessert and ordered five desserts. We ordered mango coconut jelly with ice cream, glutinous rice balls with mango, red bean soup with glutinous rice pellets, red bean soup with peanut glutinous balls and coconut ice blended. Overall, the dessert is not too sweet, although the rice pellets are a little chewy and firm. I like the fact that they used orange peel in the red bean soup. It adds a unique fruity, flowery taste to the soup. I guess my least favourite was the glutinous rice ball with mango, as the rice ball is hard and chewy.

We left the mall around 9.15pm and bid farewell to John. It's our pleasure to meet him that night.
