Kedai Kopi Jia Siang - Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Image
One of the highly recommended pork noodles or "sang yuk mien" by the local people in Sabah is Kedai Kopi Jia Siang. "Sang yuk mien" means raw pork noodles in Hakka but don't worry they don't serve raw pork. It's cooked perfectly. There's dry and soup version served with pork slices, pork balls, liver or other internal organs. You can choose your type of noodles - mee (egg noodles), mee hoon (vermicelli) or kueh teow (flat rice noodles).  What I love about this shop is their pork slices. The meat is lean and it's really tender. Best eaten together with their spicy chili sauce. Their kon lou mee or dry noodles turned out to be really dark in colour as they put lots of dark soy sauce. Usually I will dilute the dark soy sauce noodles with their soup. I like it better that way. However, I can taste the slight lye water flavour in their noodles. (There's a slight bitter after taste in my mouth) In Hakka or Cantonese lye water is called "k

Kah Hiong Ngiu Chap - Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Image
One of the best beef noodles or ngiu chap in Kota Kinabalu is Kah Hiong Ngiu Chap located at Hilltop. Ngiu chap means "mixed beef", consist of beef intestine, meat balls, tongue, liver, stew meat, omasum, heart, tendon, spleen, tripe or fresh meat served with noodles in beef broth and radish. You can choose your type of noodles - mee hoon (vermicelli), mee (egg noodles) or kueh teow (flat rice noodles) and your preferred beef parts. My regular order is ngiu lam kueh teow - flat rice noodles served with beef brisket in beef and radish broth. I prefer ngiu lam or beef brisket because the meat are soft and tender. The broth is so flavourful that you can't stop drinking until the bowl is empty. When you stepped into the shop, there's a strong smell, not just beefy but gamey. However, the beef doesn't have much of a gamey taste to it. You must try their home made chili sauce. I quite like it even though it's quite spicy for me. Best combination with the be

Kedai Kopi Wan Wan - Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Image
Located not far from my favourite bread shop  Kedai Kopi Jia Hua , Kedai Kopi Wan Wan serves fish noodles or mee hoon (dry stir or soup) for breakfast and lunch. You may choose either clear soup, hot & sour or tom yam soup. My favourite is the dry stir or kon lo mee with tom yam soup. It may not be the best tom yam soup but it's definitely one of the favourites among the locals. Price range from RM 7 to RM 16 for a bowl of fish noodles depending on your chosen toppings. You can choose your choice of toppings such as fish slice, fish cake or mee, prawns, fish head, fish skin, fish tail or spotted sea bass. Normally I will order dry stir noodles with fish cake tom yam soup. Not too spicy or sour. I enjoyed the fish cake very much. It has firm and bouncy texture. Besides that, I like their dry stir noodles too (rather small portion). It has soft texture served with minced chicken, spring onions and fried shallots. Clear soup is good too but I don't really enjoy their hot

When you wish upon a star...

Astronomy was one of my favourite subject in University. When I was a kid, my ambition is to be an astronomer! I love gazing up to the night sky. Looking at the night sky makes me wonder what else is out in the universe... The most well known and easy to find constellation is the Orion's belt or The Hunter. It can easily be seen by naked eyes. The belt consists of 3 bright stars - Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka spaced in a straight line. Apart from that, I love to gazed at the night sky hopping to see a shooting star or meteor. My first encounter with a shooting star was back in year 2011 when I was at Lake Tekapo, New Zealand. It happened so fast just like a blink of an eye! I do not even have the time to make a wish! In fact I thought it's just an illusion. Luckily I wasn't the only person who saw the shooting star. My Aunt who happens to stand beside me saw it too. Anyway that was indeed a great experience and not forgetting the magnificent view of the milky way just ri

Chilli Vanilla - Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Image
We never had Hungarian food before and decided to try some of the dishes served in this restaurant Chilli Vanilla, located in the heart of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Chilli Vanilla is a small restaurant can accommodate up to 26 people. Almost 70% of the restaurant has been occupied when we were there. Then we realized there's a small company Christmas party held here. We started off with an appetizer, tortillas, main dish and finally dessert. We ordered frikadelle - beef meat balls with Hungarian paprika and herbs, stuffed with cheese, served in a box with crispy organic lettuce and spicy salsa. I have no idea what frikadelle is and found out later that it's actually a Danish meatballs. Not one of my favourite dish here because I find it a bit dry and I couldn't taste the cheese. However I like the crispy organic lettuce. It's crunchy and refreshing. Next dish is the spicy duck tortillas - thin flat bread wrapped with smoked duck breast, jalapeno and cheese. I love t

Souled Out - Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Image
OMG! Souled Out is here in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah! That was my first impression when I saw Souled Out in Imago Mall. Souled Out used to be my favourite place in KL and I'm so glad that they are here in Sabah. What I love about Souled Out is their environment and food. Great place to chill and hang out with friends. There's TV screen everywhere for you to watch live football too. This place just opened last month and everything is brand new including the menu. We ordered fried beef noodles & chicken Cordon Bleu. Instead of Bleu it was written as "BLURR" in their menu. Fried beef noodles are flat rice noodles in eggy gravy with generous serving of beef slices, topped with spring onions and ginger. This dish tasted really good. It was flavourful and the beef was really tender. Love it!  However, chicken Cordon "BLURR" was so-so for me. This dish comes with boneless whole chicken leg wrapped around sausage, cheese and chicken ham, served with cold veg

5 most annoying things people do while driving

I enjoy driving but somehow there's always some asshole drivers out there that drive me nuts. Here's why... 5. Talking on a cell phone Is that call so important that you have to answered it while driving? If yes, please use a hands free and move over to the slow lane. Without realizing when you are on the phone, you generally drive slower than other drivers around you. Some even kept on pressing the brake without knowing it. Many times I saw cars driving so slow on a fast lane and when over take them, saw them chatting happily on the phone without a hands free. Hello??? Stop being a road hogger and move over! 4. Over take your lane while cornering Most people often cross lane while cornering. Do you know that you are suppose to stay in your lane while cornering? You wouldn't want the car beside you to slam on the emergency brake to avoid a collision. I think it's time for you to start taking driving lessons again. 3. Not signaling when turning or cha

Nando's, Oceanus - Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Image
My best buddy first took me to Nandos many years ago. I was a bit hesitant to try new things at first but she told me, you will love it. Well, she's right! It was love at first bite. I really enjoyed their succulent grilled chicken, sides dishes and most importantly their peri-peri sauces. Nandos chicken are marinated in their secret sauce before flame-grilled in your choice of peri-peri sauce. There are 5 types of peri-peri sauces to choose from - garlic, lemon & herbs, mild, hot or extra hot. My regular order will be 1/4 chicken with 2 sides. I prefer drumstick because they are the best part! My choice of peri sauce will be mild and my 2 regular sides will be either peri chips, peri wedges, garlic bread, coleslaw or corn. You can choose sides from - spicy rice, Mediterranean rice, coleslaw, peri chips, peri wedges, grilled veg, garlic bread, three bean salad or corn on the cob. I just love the grilled chicken. Chicken grilled to perfection, still juicy and tender on the

Hard Rock Cafe - Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Image
We were staying at  Promenade Hotel  the other day and decided to hang out at Hard Rock Cafe, Kota Kinabalu. The cafe is located at the Oceanus Waterfront Mall just opposite the hotel. We had late dinner, since earlier on we had our so called snacks at  Kalamatas Resto'ba . So, here's what we ordered at Hard Rock Cafe, Kota Kinabalu:   a) Their famous original legendary 10 oz burger - burger grilled medium well (unless you say otherwise) topped with smoked turkey bacon, cheddar cheese, golden fried onion rings, crisp lettuce and tomato, served on toasted butter bun with seasoned fries. Instead of seasoned fries we requested to change it to citrus coleslaw. b) Smoked beef brisket - slow cooked beef brisket topped with hickory barbecue sauce and crispy onions on grilled sourdough bread, served with seasoned fries, cowboy beans and citrus coleslaw. We were not into fries lately, so I requested them to change the seasoned fries to mashed potatoes* instead. c) Thick sha
