Tawau/Semporna - Day 7 (Tawau Town)

Two years ago we didn't get to eat Union Tea House's egg tart because they missed out our order and we need to wait at least 1 hour for the new batch of egg tarts! So this trip we decided to try our luck. We went out at 10.30am and took a Grab car to Union Tea House, approximately 10 minutes drive (2.6km) from ROOMS hotel. (Grab fare - RM 4). We ordered Union teh tarik ping, Union yung yong ping, two egg tarts (original & charcoal flavour) and French toast. Teh tarik tastes slightly sourish while yung yong has a smooth texture and taste much better than the teh tarik. Their egg tart has a crispy crust filled with a soft creamy lightly sweetened egg custard. I prefer their charcoal egg tart because the crust is crispier and it has the smoky taste. French toast on the other hand doesn't taste good to me. It tastes like stale bread and peanut butter filling is just too sweet for my liking.

After our light brunch we decided to have a bowl of Soto at Kedai Kopi Yuan Yuan. We had it two years ago and it's good. So we took a Grab ride, 9 minutes drive (3.7km) from Union Tea House. (Grab fare - RM 5). I ordered a bowl of Soto fish ball with fish paste while my partner ordered Soto prawn with prawn ball. The Soto broth is slightly spicy but flavourful. I like their fish ball and fish paste but vermicelli is a bit too hard for my liking this time. My partner commented that the Soto taste much better on our first visit, two year ago.

Total bill - RM 21.30

While waiting for our Grab car to arrive, I walked to Sweet Secret Bakery just few shop lots away from Kedai Kopi Yuan Yuan. I saw a customer bought a piece of mochi ball mango which looks good to me. So without any hesitation, I bought one as well and decided to have it as tea break at our hotel later. Our grab car arrived shortly and ROOMS hotel is just 7 minutes drive (2.1km) from Kedai Kopi Yuan Yuan. (Grab fare - RM 5). To my disappointment the mochi doesn't taste good at all. I can't finish the whole piece as the mango filling is sour and the mochi skin is too sweet for my liking.

We went out for tea break at 4pm. We decided to eat pisang goreng cheese at Indo Cafe located at Jalan Bantu. Just a 10 minutes drive (4.3km) away from ROOMS hotel (Grab fare - RM 7), this cafe is popular for their pisang goreng cheese. We ordered one set of  pisang goreng cheese, mango sago, tembikai cincau and one set of sayap goreng (fried chicken wings). Their pisang goreng cheese are dusted with brown sugar and top with shredded cheese. It's crispy and delicious because they use ripe bananas. I love their chicken wings too as it's crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Tembikai cincau and mango sago (has a smooth ice blended texture with a hint of sourness) is on the sweet side but still bearable to me.

Dozo is just 4 minutes walking distance (300m) from Indo Cafe. We decided to have our early dinner here. So I ordered a plate of ayam berempah with butter rice while my partner ordered a bowl of Soto noodles (gon lou mee) with fried fish and beef. You get to mix and match your own noodles soup. Fried fish is fresh and beef is tender. I love their gon lou noodle texture. It's soft and chewy at the same time. Soto soup is flavourful and not so spicy compared to the soto soup that we had at Kedai Kopi Yuan Yuan earlier. Ayam berempah on the other hand comes with crackers, chicken, butter rice, hard boiled egg, cucumber and peanuts coated with sugar. Overall we are satisfied with our dinner. After dinner we took a Grab car back to our hotel. (Grab fare - RM 6).

Total bill - RM 19.80

Since we didn't get to eat mango snow ice from Ice Idea Dessert Cafe yesterday, we decided to reach there before 7.30pm today. We're not pleased with our dessert because the mango is sour. I did ask the staff before placing the order and I was told that the mango is sweet. Anyway, we didn't want to make a fuss and just ate our sour mango. At least their jelly mango is nice and the shave ice is smooth. Iced Dessert Cafe is just 6 minutes walking distance (500m) from ROOMS hotel. My partner accompanied me back to the hotel and he continued to walk around Kubota Sentral to achieve his daily target of 10k steps. Before midnight, his hunger pangs strike and luckily just below our hotel there's mamak stall that open until late night. Ended up he ate alone because I was too lazy to get out of the bed...
