Korea - Day 9 (Itaewon - Leeum Samsung Museum of Art - The War Memorial of Korea - Hongdae Street - Ewha Woman’s University Street)

It's so convenient to get around Seoul by bus with the help of Kakao map App. We took bus no. 143 from Aloft Seoul Myeongdong to Itaewon (Bus fare - ₩ 1,200 per person). The journey takes approximately 22 minutes and the bus is quite empty on a late Sunday morning. Temperature is cold around 4℃ and it's a sunny Sunday.

My friend recommended me to try this Nekkid Wings located in Itaewon. There's 15 types of flavours - Lemon pepper, Parmesan garlic, Honey butter, Soy wasabi, Smokehouse, Korean glaze, Classic buffalo, Yang-yum, Cajun dry rub, Amazinger, Habanero mayo, Mala mala, Jerk, Amazinger xtra and Hot buffalo. We have no idea which flavour to choose and asked the staff for recommendation. She recommended us to try Parmesan garlic and Amazinger. Amazinger is Nekkid Wings' signature sauce with a hint of ginger. We went ahead with her recommendation and ordered a single platters meal. We choose giant onion ring croquette as our side with ranch dip.

Chicken wing is juicy, crispy and nicely coated with the sauce. We preferred Amazinger flavour over Parmesan garlic. Their onion is huge. This is the biggest onion ring that I've ever seen and it's good. They chopped the onions, mix it with other ingredients and coated it with bread crumbs. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. We will definitely come back in the future to try the other flavours.

3 types of platters:
a) Single - 10 wings (2 flavours), 1 side, 1 dip, 1 celery and carrots
b) Double - 20 wings (4 flavours), 2 sides, 2 dips, 2 celery and carrots
c) Party - 40 wings (8 flavours), 4 sides, 3 dips, 3 celery and carrots

6 types of sides:
a) Coleslaw
b) Shoestring fries
c) Giant onion ring croquette
d) Waffle fries
e) Caesar salad
f) Beef chili

4 types of dips:
a) Ranch
b) Hot ranch
c) Blue cheese
d) Habanero ranch

Itaewon Street is approximately 10 minutes walking distance (650m) from Nekkid Wings. We passed by Itaewon Underground Market and went down to have a look. The mall is very warm and quite dead on a Sunday afternoon. On the way to Itaewon Street, we stumbled upon Hollys Coffee. The cafe has a good ambience and a good view of the Itaewon crosswalk.

Order only taken through the kiosk and it's all in Korean language except for the menu description. We had a hard time using the self-service kiosk as there's no one there to assist you. They have limited staff and most of them are busy in the kitchen. Glad that in the end our payment using credit card went through. We order a glass of Peach Strawberry Crush and a slice of Tiramisu. Peach Strawberry Crush is good. Not too sweet and very refreshing. However, Tiramisu is a bit sweet for my liking.

After our tea break, we walked to the Seoul Halloween crowd crush accident whereby more than 150 were killed due to the crowd surge in a narrow alley of Itaewon next to the Hamilton Hotel. Along the narrow alley, there's colour sticky notes written in tribute to the victims. There's boxes of sticky notes on the table for visitors to leave their condolences messages as well. It's one of the most heartbreaking scene.

Leeum Samsung Museum of Art is approximately 13 minutes walking distance (900m) from Hollys Coffee Itaewon. When we reached there, we were not allowed to enter the exhibition hall because it's reserved for online reservation only. My friend reminded me previously but I totally forgotten about it. Ended up we didn't get to visit the museum.

Our next stop is The War Memorial of Korea. We took bus no. 110A from Itaewon (Bus fare - ₩ 1,200 per person). Admission to the War Memorial is free for all visitors. There's indoor and outdoor exhibition area. You can even get to see what's inside the tanks, warplanes and warship. It's an awesome place and great place for visitors to learn about the Korean War.

We left The War Memorial around 5.30pm and took a subway from Samgakji Line 6 to Sangu Station (₩ 1,250 per person). From Sangu Station we walked to Monster Pizza and order a slice of pepperoni pizza. It's a small shop in Hongdae and the pizza is huge. The crust is thin and pair exceptionally well with Coke.

BBQ Chicken & Beer is just 5 minutes walking distance (335m) from Monster Pizza. We order half Gold Olive chicken and half flavoured chicken. This restaurant serves juicy chicken with crispy skin. However, we still prefer the fried chicken from BHC. The restaurant bathroom requires a code to unlock and the password is displayed on the fridge door.

Hongdae Street is very lively at night. The street is filled with street performers from dancing to live singing. There's cafes, restaurants, fashion shops and street food.

We took bus no. 7737 from Hongdae to Ewha Women's University (Bus fare - ₩ 1,200 per person). However, visitor access to the campus is restricted in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Hence, we didn't get to see the beautiful landscape. We have to take the long route and cross over Sinchon Station and finally we are at the front entrance of Ewha Women's University. At night, Ewha Women's University shopping street is so quiet as many shops have closed down. Since there's nothing much to see, we took bus no. 7011 back to our hotel (Bus fare - ₩ 1,200 per person).

Note: ₩ 1,000 =  RM 3.40
