Rottnest Island - Perth, Western Australia

Rottnest Island is located 18km off the coast of Perth. There are two ways that you can get into Rottnest Island - by ferry/boat or by plane. The most popular way of getting into the Island is by ferry. Rottnest Express provides departure from four ports which is the Northport (1 Emma Place, Rous Head North Fremantle), Fremantle (C Shed, Victoria Quay), Hillary Boat Harbour in Perth's north and Perth (Pier 2, Barrack St Jetty). Rottnest ferries take approximately 25 minutes from Fremantle, 45 minutes from Hillarys Boat Harbour, or 90 minutes from Perth's Barrack Street Jetty.

There are great range of day tours available (start from $99 ex-Fremantle) or you can go for the free and easy tour ($85 ex-Fremantle). We decided to take the free and easy tour ex-Fremantle on a Tuesday since they have this Telethon Tuesday with the return fare of $36. However you need to purchase the ticket via Rottnest Express website.

We took the 11.30am ferry, ex-Fremantle and reached Rottnest Island around 12pm. As soon as we stepped out from the ferry, the island view was simply breathtaking! White sandy beach and crystal clear water. It was spring when we visited Rottnest Island and the water was icy cold. Hence we were unable to swim in this beautiful island. We had our lunch at this Rottnest Bakery/Cafe before exploring the island on foot. Public vehicles are not allowed on the island. So, the only way to explore the island is on a bike, use the regular bus service or walk around the island.

We started our journey at 1.30pm, went up the Vlaming lookout point, walked pass the Garden Lake, Herschel Lake, Geordie Bay, Fay Bay, Longreach Bay, The Basin, Pinky Beach, Bathurst Lighthouse and back to Thomson Bay at 4pm. While wandering around the island, we bumped into a few quokka. A quokka is a small marsupial, found in a limited number of areas of Western Australia, mainly in Rottnest Island. We can see them wandering around the island and they have no fear of human. However it is illegal to handle the animals and no feeding is allowed.

We took the last ferry, depart from Rottnest Island at 4.30pm. It was a relaxing trip and how I wish we could stay longer in this beautiful island...
