Kudos (Modern European Dining) - Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Image
Kudos is located in the busy street of Gaya, just right below The Jesselton Hotel. Cozy, clean and classy ambience suitable for private parties and functions. The restaurant was empty when we arrived but a few customers came in after that. The staff were friendly and attentive. This is our 2nd time dining here and it will not be the last. During our first visit with my partner's friend, I ordered chicken, ham and asparagus and it was good. So here we are again to try something different. This round we ordered Norwegian Salmon (comes with herbs, lemon mayonnaise, broccoli and potatoes) and  Spaghetti Con Pollo E Funghi (comes with chicken, sage, mushrooms, cheese flakes and wine cream sauce). Sage is a type of herb commonly used in Italian cuisine.  After we have placed our order, the friendly staff served us their complimentary bread. It's a crispy toasted bread comes with a dipping sauce. We used to call the bread "roti kok". Frankly, I have no idea what's in ...

Ah Fatt (Penang) Kueh Teow Soup - Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Image
I always like kueh teow soup or also known as flat rice noodles serve in a clear broth soup, topped with fish balls, slices of fish cakes or shredded chicken. What makes a good kueh teow soup is the broth. Besides that, texture of the kueh teow and fish balls play an important role too. Ah Fatt (Penang) Kueh Teow Soup located at Lido, Kota Kinabalu (corner shop, opposite wet market with the signboard Kuan Onn Tim Sum) serve good kueh teow soup. My customized order will be kueh teow soup with fish balls, fish cakes and no bean sprouts. As usual, my bowl of kueh teow soup comes with 5 fish balls, few slices of fish cakes and some vegetables. The broth is very flavourful and the home made fish balls are delicious. It has a bouncy texture and most importantly there's no fish bone in it. A fish bone stuck in between your teeth or throat can be extremely uncomfortable. Their fish cakes are good too. Thinly sliced and best eaten together with the red chili dipped in soy sauce. Apar...

Ang's Hotel (Fatt Kee Restaurant) - Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Image
One of my favourite dish in this restaurant is the chicken wings with oyster sauce. Seems that they deep fried the chicken wings before stir fried with oyster sauce and minced garlic. It's well marinated and delicious. Apart from that, sweet and sour prawn, pork chop and baby kale with salted fish were good too. Prawns were fresh and succulent. Just like the chicken wings, the prawns have been deep fried before stir fried with the sweet and sour sauce. This gives a slight crisp and crunchy taste of the prawns. Besides chicken, prawns, pork and vegetables, they serve fish, bean curd, fish, beef, seafood and soup. We tried their fish fillet with ginger and onion in our previous trip but we didn't enjoy it. The fish fillet has a very soft flesh and all we could taste was the batter. This place usually known as Ang's Hotel instead of Fatt Kee Restaurant. Located at the ground floor of Ang's Hotel, the restaurant only accommodate 15 tables and it's a non air conditi...

East Coast Food Court - Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Image
I love Malay style grilled fish or "Ikan bakar" in Malay. One of the popular street food found all over Malaysia. Grilled fish with "sambal" in banana leaves, moist, aromatic and full of flavours. Sambal is a type of sauce made from variety of chili pepper, shrimp paste, garlic, ginger, shallot, sugar, salt and lime juice. I'm so glad that we found this stall, East Coast BBQ Lido located at Lido Square which serves delicious grilled fish. Food court only opens in the evening, as the place turned out to be a market in the morning. They sell variety of seafood such as fish, sea snails, squids and clams. I just love their grilled fish. Most of the time we will order stingray fish. The spicy level is just right for me. The fish remains moist, succulent and full of flavours. Best eaten when it's hot. Update: This restaurant has moved to a new location. Lido Square (Market / food court) Food court East Coast BBQ Lido Stingray (Ikan...

Lucy's Kitchen - Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Image
Located at 88 Marketplace Kota Kinabalu, Lucy's Kitchen serves Western and Asian food. This is our third time here and I come back for my favourite meal - mee hoon goreng! Simple recipe but taste good. You can either order mee hoon goreng biasa (RM 3.90 comes with sambal, egg sunny side up, fried anchovies, ground nuts and sliced cucumber) or mee hoon goreng special (RM 10.90 serves the same sides as bee hoon goreng biasa except you get the following selection of either curry chicken or chicken rendang or beef rendang or fried chicken) I've tried both curry chicken and chicken rendang. It was good.  Apart from that, the sambal was good too. Not too spicy for me and a perfect combination with the mee hoon goreng. Besides that, I love their crispy anchovies. It reminds me of my home cook mee hoon goreng with anchovies! My partner ordered nasi goreng kampung (spicy Malaysian style fried rice) served with chicken wings, egg sunny side up, sliced cucumber, sambal and fried cr...

Kedai Kopi Jia Hua - Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Image
I started eating bread when I was in kindergarten. Everyday I have bread (without fail) during recess period. It's either bread with butter, margarine, peanut butter or home made pork floss. No doubt, all my friends called me "the bread girl". Do I get bored by eating the same stuff everyday? Hmm... not really. I used to eat those white rectangular bread sold by Bengali and we called it roti Bengali. They traveled on their motorcycles fitted with a metal box with variety of snacks and bread. Daily around 3.30pm, the bread man will come with his motorcycle honking around our neighbourhood. We will call out to him by using the simple phrase "roti", "roti"! :) It's been 18 years since I left school and I'm still fond of bread. I've tried this bun at Kedai Kopi Jia Hua in Kota Kinabalu and I really like it. They served either bread or bun with the following combination: a) Cool butter with kaya bun / bread b) Cool butter bun / bread c...
