Taiping, Perak - Food Hunting Trip

Food hunting with friends is one of the most enjoyable experiences in life. Even though it's a short one, it's great to see them again. Our friend Mu suggested we meet for lunch at Restaurant Yat Sun. This restaurant is famous for its Hainanese chicken chop. My partner ordered their signature Hainanese chicken chop whereas I chose a crispy chicken chop. Actually, they are both the same, but mine is cut into small pieces and his is one whole piece. The chicken is coated with a light batter with a crispy exterior and juicy interior. The dish comes with a savory gravy and is served with peas, tomatoes and potatoes. I chose a cucumber-plum drink, which was refreshing and not overly sweet. Thanks, Mu, for the lovely lunch treat.

After lunch, we check into Novotel Taiping. Daz and Sam were very thoughtful to bring us treats all the way from Sydney and Ipoh. :)

S&T Dessert House is just 4 minutes walking distance (260m) from Novotel Taiping. We decided to have our tea break here. We ordered their homemade mochi, mango sago and red bean soup with rice balls. I enjoy their homemade mochi. It's warm, chewy and has a well-balanced sweetness. However, the mango sago lacks flavour and has a sour taste. It comes with a little cup of coconut milk on the side. On the other hand, red bean soup comes with three large balls of mochi stuffed with red bean paste, toasted black sesame seeds and crumbled ground peanuts. The mochi balls are soft, chewy and tasteless. I find the red bean paste to be a little too sweet. Whereas toasted black sesame seeds taste gritty. I prefer the mochi stuffed with crumbled ground peanuts out of the three.

We went for a little walk on the mall after our tea break and the upper floor of the mall appears to be deserted, with many retailers closed. The cinema appears to be lifeless as well. Taiping Mall is just directly across the street from S&T Dessert House.

Mu brought us for dinner at this Restaurant Light House Seafood. It's 15 minutes drive (10.4km) from Novotel Taiping. There is no air conditioning at the restaurant and it's not very busy. Their signature dish is the seafood porridge, comes with fish, prawns and fish balls. The seafood porridge is served in a big claypot and it's very flavourful. The porridge is made in the Teochew style, whereby the rice grains are still whole and it tastes more like rice in hot soup. The fish ball is slightly dense with just enough bounce and bite.

We also ordered shark meat, which I had never tried before. Surprisingly the meat is tender and the dish is flavourful. Steamed clams were delicious but I was very unlucky since I could feel grains of sand when I bit into them. The little fried fish were crunchy on the outside and flavourful on the inside. Besides that, the claypot tofu is comforting and has a silky smooth texture. Overall it's a good pick.

We returned to our hotel after dinner and because Yogurt & Milk is right across the street, we decided to try it. The shop has a good interior design and appears to be comfortable. I had Mexican avocado yogurt, Vincent had blueberry yogurt and my partner had their classic milk tea with grass jelly. Our yogurt drink was very sour. My partner's milk tea tastes so much better than our yogurt drink.

We had our breakfast at this Restaurant Bee Lun just 2 minutes walking distance (160m) from Novotel Taiping. Mu comes here for breakfast on a regular basis because he likes their curry mee. This shop serves hakka yong tau fu, hakka mee, curry mee and wan tan mee. Each piece of yong tau fu cost RM 1.30. Yong tau fu is made by stuffing meat or fish paste into tofu or vegetables such as okra, bitter gourd and chili pepper. You can order your preferred noodles and top them with selected yong tau fu.

I ordered wan tan mee with shredded chicken while my partner ordered curry noodles with yong tau fu. Wan tan mee can be ordered with shredded chicken, minced pork or curry prawns. My wan tan mee comes with shredded chicken and bean sprouts. My partner loves it. However, the noodle texture is a little too firm for my taste but it goes well with curry sauce. My partner had curry noodles which were a little too spicy for me.

We had a great time catching up with everyone. At the end of the day, it's not about how amazing the food tastes, but about the companionship...
