Labuan - Day 2

Island Garden Food & Cafe is just 2 minutes drive (800 m) from Dorsett Grand Labuan. We decided to have our brunch here and ordered mee goreng udang (fried noodles with big prawns) and curry noodles. The fried noodles were nothing impressive except for the big prawns. It's fresh and succulent. Me, on the other hand had curry noodles with fish balls and fish cakes. Flavour of the curry wasn't strong enough but I love the fish balls and fish cakes. After brunch, we went and check out some of the duty-free shops. Chocolates, beers, wines and liquors are cheap and it's just pure heaven for drinkers.

Chimney Museum is approximately 19 minutes drive (13.6 km) from Dorsett Grand Labuan. The museum displays the early history of Tanjung Kubong and coal mining activities in Labuan. Just beside the museum is the Chimney Tower, one of the most famous and unique historical landmarks in Labuan. However until today, the main purpose of the Chimney is still unknown. Free admission for both Chimney Museum and Chimney Tower.

Labuan Bird Park is just 1 minute drive or 4 minutes walking distance (290 m) from Chimney Tower. We were the only visitors there and the place was not very well kept. We bumped into one of the staff there and he was kind enough to guide us into one of the aviary to see the grey crowned crane's nesting area. Both the male and female bird were very aggressive guarding their nest and it's our first time seeing a grey crowned crane. The bird is tall with long slender feet and it's the national bird of Uganda.

We had our early dinner at Mr. Crab, 12 minutes drive (9.4 km) from Peace Park. We reached there around 4pm and we were the only customer there. The restaurant has a team of friendly staff. We ordered lobster dish, salted egg bitter gourd tempura style and steamed fish. We waited more than half and hour for our dish to be served. By the time we started eating it's almost 5pm. Both lobster and fish were fresh but not superb. Coconut pudding doesn't taste as good as the one that we had on our first day in Labuan.

(Total bill RM 192)

We decided to go for supper at night since we had early dinner. So we ended up at JJ Nazar just 3 minutes drive (650 m) from Dorsett Grand Labuan. One of their specialty is roti cobra. It's not a snake dish but roti canai with lamb curry and sunny side up egg. Basically this dish is just too spicy for me and gamey taste of the lamb was very strong. I had "roti canai garing" or also known as "roti kosong garing" (crispy roti canai) but it turned out not so crispy. Tandoori chicken on the other hand doesn't taste as good as it looks.
