Ipoh, Perak - Food Hunting Trip (Day VII)

One thing I love about Ipoh is the food! Within a day we managed to cover 6 places. :) Am I a big eater? Not really... Do I get fat by eating all these delicious food? Of course not... I'm just a skinny girl (I mean really skinny) who enjoys eating. Maybe I should be thanking my parents for the "skinny genetic" :)

We had our first meal of the day at Restoran Thean Chun and it was my first time here. This shop is known as the "Hall of Mirrors" due to the mirrors lining the entire length of a wall. The shop is very crowded during breakfast and finding a place to sit can be a hassle. We were lucky that we found a small table right beside the "chee cheong fun" stall and what a small world. My partner bumped into his relative with his group of friends here!

We ordered the pork "satay" (skewered grilled meat served with sauce). The owner will serve you a plate of satays when you placed your order and you only need to pay for the sticks of satay that you have consumed. If you finished up the whole plate, the owner will refill it for you. However if you can't, the owner will will gather the left over satays and serve to other customers. For the sake of hygiene, make sure you don't contaminate the plate! You will also be served a plate of cucumber as the side dishes.

Besides satay, we ordered "popiah" (spring roll), "chee cheong fun" (steamed flat rice noodle) and "kai see hor fun" (rice noodles served with chicken, prawn and garnished with spring onion) This kai see hor fun is one of the popular food here and you will need to wait at least 30 minutes during peak hours. The popiah was good. Filled with yambean, cucumber, prawns, egg and topped with the home made sauce. Last but not least the chee cheong fun, topped with shallot crisps, sesame seeds, picked green chili, sweet sauce and chili sauce was nice too. Overall the food here is good.

Next, is my favourite shop serving Ipoh white coffee and roti kahwin. Kedai Kopi Sin Yoon Loong as usual is always crowded. So far this is the best roti kahwin that I have ever had. Roti kahwin is basically bread spread with butter and "kaya" (coconut jam). What I love about this roti kahwin - the bread is toasted to perfection and it is not too thick. Perfect match with a cup of Ipoh white coffee, smooth taste and not too sweet.

We had our lunch at this Kedai Kopi Yong Suan. The nasi kandar here is called "nasi ganja" because of its addictiveness. Very true indeed because each time when we were in Ipoh, definately we will drop by this shop and even "tapau" (take away) back to KL. So, what is so special about this nasi kandar? Everything! The rice is fragrant and you must try their chicken. Deep fried chicken with hot gravy must not be missed! Besides that, the beef rendang is good too.

Time for late afternoon tea break! Tau fu fa is made from coagulated soya bean milk served with sugar syrup. How can you resist this tau fu fa when you are in Ipoh! The tau fu fa is silky smooth and fragrant. I just love the combination of tau fu fa with soya bean. They have moved to next door (corner lot), nicely renovated with bigger space.

You can choose to queue at the counter or drive-thru. Majority will prefer drive-thru because you just need to wait in your car while the friendly staff will walk over and take your order. They will then serve you the tau fu fa. Once you have finished eating, they will collect the empty bowl from you.

So, what's for dinner? None other than the delicious "tong fun hai" (claypot glass noodles with crabs) This restaurant is located in Bercham, Ipoh. My favourite of course the "tong fun hai", fishballs and steam lala. You can either order the claypot rice or claypot glass noodles with crabs. The crabs are very fresh, big and juicy. If you order the claypot glass noodles and you are a slow eater, make sure you scoop the glass noodles out from the claypot as it tend to get soggy very fast.

The fishballs are huge like a ping pong ball. They are large, fresh and tasty. The owner will only served the fishballs if it's fresh. Steam lala garnished with spring onions, red chili, cili padi and ginger was delicious. The lala was fresh, clean and the sauce was superb. If you plan to have late dinner, make sure you made reservation for the crabs and fish balls. They do ran out of stock very quickly.

We ended the night with a bowl of mix fruit ice at Thong Sui Kai. I wanted to return to the stall that we had yesterday but we couldn't find a place to sit. It was so crowded and we have no choice but to switch stall. This Stall No.12 used to be my favourite stall until I found out about Stall No.22! Anyway, we ordered a bowl of mix fruit ice without ice cream and the price turned out to be the same. We thought it will be cheaper without the ice cream. The mix fruit ice was good but I still prefer our newly discover stall No.22
