Miri, Sarawak - Day 1 (Tua Pek Kong Temple - Tanjung Lobang Beach - The Imperial Mall)

We have been bitten by the travel bug! I wonder if there's any cure for it but for the time being the only cure is to plan a short trip and that's how we ended up at Miri, Sarawak. Air Asia was having a promotion and we managed to get a round trip ticket from Kota Kinabalu to Miri for RM 65.80 per person.

Our flight was scheduled to depart at 11.15am and the most convenient and fastest way to have our breakfast is in the airport. So we head over to McDonald! I had sausage McMuffin breakfast meal (RM 10.95) that comes with hash brown and tea while my partner had double sausage egg muffin breakfast meal (RM 12.75) that comes with hash brown and Milo (You can upgrade your tea or coffee to Milo by topping up RM 1.70)

Our flight took approximately 55 minutes to reach Miri from Kota Kinabalu airport. We rented a car from HRB Car Rental Miri for 3 days (RM 230 for Perodua Axia AT with a deposit of RM 150) The staff waited for us at the arrival pick up area and handed the car keys to us after we have checked the car condition.

Our first destination in Miri was Naga Liar. The timing was just nice for lunch and we ordered a plate of nasi lemak served with fried chicken, fried egg, sambal with anchovies, peanuts, cucumber and salted fish. We ordered additional side dishes - a piece of curry chicken. Fragrant coconut rice and I like the fact that they added salted fish as part of their condiments. Fried chicken has a crispy skin but curry chicken on the other hand was just so-so for me. I like their sambal with anchovies as it's not too spicy.

Dessert is my favourite part of the meal. So after lunch, we went for dessert hunting and ended up at Ice Garden. Cozy restaurant with great ambience. They served snow ice, shaved ice, milkshake, fresh milk, specialty tea and Popsicle. We ordered one of their signature snow ice - sea salt peanut snow ice served with taro balls, crunchy waffles and a scoop of watermelon milk gelato. The shaved ice is very smooth and nicely blend with the peanut flakes. However, it's a bit sweet for my liking. I don't really enjoy their taro balls because it's chewy and dense. Watermelon milk gelato on the other hand is refreshing but mild in flavour. Overall, the dessert price is a bit too pricey for me.

We checked in Pullman Miri Waterfront around 2.40pm and my partner took a short nap before we started exploring Miri town in the late afternoon. Tua Pek Kong temple is just 7 minutes drive (2.1km) from Pullman Miri Waterfront. It is the oldest temple in Miri.

We drove around Miri town and stumbled upon a fruit stall selling local fruits. One thing my partner absolutely can't resist is durian! Of course his favourite will always be Musang King but since there's no Musang King we decided to try their durian kampung. I like the bittersweet taste of durian and even though this durian kampung is not as good as Musang King at least it can curb our cravings. We bought a packet of water guava as well (RM 2 per packet) and it's sweet and refreshing. Best eaten together with sour plum powder.

Durian kampung - RM 39

I love taking sunset photos and Tanjung Lobang beach is approximately 11 minutes drive (4.9km) from Pullman Miri Waterfront. At first we wanted to go to the Tanjung Lobang sea cliff. So, we followed the direction stated in the Google map but it leads us to a college! Then, only we realized the cliff is not accessible by road. Basically you need to walk along Tanjung Lobang beach to reach the cliff.

We head back to Miri town to have our dinner. Ming Cafe is just 4 minutes drive (950m) or 7 minutes walking distance (550m) from Pullman Miri Waterfront. Initially we were thinking whether to have our dinner at Container City which is just 2 minutes walking distance (170m) from Ming Cafe. Since the place looks a bit dead we decided to have our dinner at Ming Cafe.

Ming Cafe serves variety of Asian, Indian and Western cuisine. Apart from that, you can chill at the bar and have some beer or cocktails. I had chicken Cordon Blue served with fries, salad and baked bean. The chicken turned out to be dry but it's tender. It will be good if it's moist. My partner had minced pork Thai basil served with rice and fried egg. The minced pork is very flavourful and it's delicious. Besides that, we ordered a small plate of fried pork belly as well. Pork belly turned out to be good and best combine with the chili sauce but just too much fat.

Overall we enjoyed our dinner and I miss the good old days where we used to hang out at bars enjoying good food with great music.
