Taiwan - Day 6 (Taipei 101 - Xinyi District - Ningxia Night Market)

On our day 6 in Taiwan we visited Taipei 101, Xinyi District and Ningxia night market. As usual we took MRT from National Taiwan Sport University Station to Sanchong Station. (Cost: NT 45) Then, we switched from Zhonghe-Xinlu Line (yellow line) to Tamsui-Xinyi Line (red line) at Dongmen Station and stopped at Taipei 101 Station. (Cost: NT 28)

Suppose we wanted to have our brunch at Ichigen but the queue was too long. So, we decided to grab some snack first and had J&G signature popcorn chicken in Xinyi District. On our previous trip, we had this popcorn chicken in Ximending. This round, the fried chicken doesn't taste as good as it did previously because there's chicken bones and tendons. Just next to the shop, there's a milk tea shop and we bought a glass of grass jelly tea. It's good. Not too sweet and very refreshing.

Ichigen ramen is located in Neo 19, a small mall in Xinyi District. Our planning was just perfect. We went back to the ramen shop after we had our snacks and there's no more queue. We ordered one bowl of ramen. There's 4 types of soups and 3 types of seasoning for you to choose from. We decided to go with the original soup. The soup was flavourful but I find it a bit salty. Apart from that, it has a very strong shrimp taste.

Choose one from the following 4 types of Ichigen's special soups:
a) Original - a straight soup with full flavours of shrimp
b) Moderate - pork bone soup blended moderately in a shrimp soup
c) Rich flavour - a rich soup with a blend of shrimp soup and pork flavoured soup
d) Taiwan limited - a blend of shrimp and pork bone soup with less salt

3 types of seasoning:
a) Shrimp & miso
b) Shrimp & salt
c) Shrimp & sauce

I'm a fan of mango shaved ice and Ice Monster is a famous shop for it. The queue was quite long but it's fast moving. Before we placed our order, the staff informed us that currently their mangoes are sour. We decided to just go ahead with our order and it turned out to be really sour! Even the shaved ice itself tasted sourish. We couldn't finish the whole bowl and regret for ordering it.

After we had our dessert, we strolled along Song Gao road. There's many street performers and if you love music, it's a great way to spend your time here.

This is my favourite dessert in Taipei. Hiyazaku is a crispy coating of croquant and almond stuffed with soft serve ice cream. It's so good that one piece is never enough.

Ningxia night market is popular among locals. We took MRT from Taipei 101 Station to Shuanglian Station. (Cost: NT 20) Ningxia night market is approximately 9 minutes walk (750 m) from Shuanglian Station. First street food that I bought was my favourite fried quail egg and my partner bought his favourite sausage.

We had other street food such as mee suah, peanut roll with ice cream, Liu Yu Zi fried taro balls, beef fried noodles and a bowl of soya bean pudding comes with glutinous balls (filled with either peanut or black sesame seed paste). You can easily spotted Liu Yu Zi fried taro balls stall because this is the only stall that has the longest queue. It's crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. This plain taro ball is stuffed with salted egg yolk and pork floss. Best eaten when it's hot.

Once we reached National Taiwan Sport University Station, Ben already waiting for us at the MRT station. So sweet of him to bring us for another round of food hunting. He brought us for supper at this soybean milk shop. We ordered fried dumplings, bun, seaweed rice roll stuffed with pork floss, "shaobing" (baked layered flatbread), "youtiao" (chinese cruller) and a cup of hot soybean milk. My favourite is the seaweed rice roll. Besides that, love the soybean milk too. Not too sweet and it taste exactly like homemade soy milk.

Note: NT$ 1 = RM 0.1460
