Sandakan Food Journey, Day 2 - Sabah

We started our 2nd day in Sandakan with a bowl of fish balls soup noodles. You can choose either mee (noodles), mee hoon (vermicelli) or kueh teow (flat rice noodles). I ordered a bowl of kueh teow soup with fish balls and prawn balls. Whereas my partner just ordered a mixture of fish balls, fish cakes and dumplings soup. Their fish balls have a rough texture unlike those soft and smooth texture that I preferred. Apart from that, I couldn't taste any prawns in their prawn balls and their soy milk tasted bland as well. Overall taste just so-so for me.

Total bill - RM 14 (including 2 glasses of soy milk)

We went straight to Restaurant Beaufort after our first meal. We were here to try out their famous roasted duck but to our disappointment, all the roasted ducks were sold out before noon. Ended up we ordered roasted pork, barbecue pork and barbecue ribs. Food was ok but not superb. There's just no "umph" in their barbecue pork sauce. Besides that, roasted pork was a bit too fat for us.

Total bill - RM 18.50 (Roasted pork, barbecue pork and barbecue ribs for 2 person, 1 plate of dry noodle and 2 glasses of cold Chinese tea)

We were too full to continue with tea break. So, we decided to take away the egg tart and UFO tart. We plan to have it later after a swim at the hotel swimming pool. Egg tart turned out to be so-so for me and UFO tart was a bit too sweet for my liking.

A trip to Sandakan wouldn't be complete without having a seafood dinner. So here we are at Restaurant Seafood Sim Sim 88, just 9 minute drive from our hotel stay - Four Point by Sheraton Sandakan. We ordered 4 types of seafood - fish, clamps, crabs and prawns. All the seafood were very fresh and tasty. However, all the dishes tasted sweet except for "Kam Heong style" crab. Sweetest dish was the steamed "teochew style" fish. I was expecting a sour and appetizing dish but turned out to be too sweet for my liking. Vietnamese prawns recommended by the staff tasted sweet with a hint of spiciness and same goes for the steamed clamp. I was wondering whether the chef actually mistaken sugar as salt. I couldn't find any balance in their dishes.
